Question

Are you mortgaging your children's future because 0f all the "rights" you have as an American?

ie. "right" to a $4 coffee, "right" to a new pair of shoes (even though you don't need them), "right" to an iPhone, the right to go out to dinner, etc., etc. - even though we can't afford to do any or all of these things as much as we do...

Thanks to Perry Noble for kicking me in the gut with this thought...

Excellent topic for discussion!

I don't think that it has anything to do with rights, or the Wrights, but with people choosing to pamper themselves with short-term pleasures because they have the ability to.

I wouldn't say they're right or wrong. I don't think that it's my place to tell someone how to spend the money or credit they earn, but I will vote with my fellow citizens to ensure that part of their money goes to pay for services they take or have the option to take advantage of. So, I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that way.

Of course Americans have a "right" to those things, or rather, the "freedom" to enjoy those things (luxuries, really), but people often forget that along with rights come responsibilities; we must exercise self-control with these things so we don't stretch ourselves too financially thin. I think it is wise to forgo some short-term luxuries and save for long-term needs. It's another case where balance is needed.
